Surprise snowstorm snarls Shaver Lake traffic
A surprise snowstorm above Auberry on Sunday afternoon caused a string
of minor crashes and snarled traffic along Highway 168 near Shaver
Lake, the California Highway Patrol said.
A heavy band of snow fell through the area between 3 and 4:30 p.m. and
was heaviest near Auberry, saidJim Andersen, a meteorologist with the
National Weather Service in Hanford.
CHP Sgt. Shane McConnell said thestorm dropped about an inch of snow
near Shaver Lake and caught drivers unaware.
McConnell said several hundred vehicles either got stuck or slid off
the road and nine minor crashes occurred.
