Modesto, California - Stanislaus County District Attorney Birgit
Fladager announced today that Larry Eugene Smith, age 34, of Modesto,
was convicted of Robbery, and Channing Wilson Green, age 37, of
Modesto, was convicted of Grand Theft from a Person and admitted
serving a priorterm of imprisonment. Deputy District Attorney Jeffrey
M. Laugero prosecuted the case on behalf of the People. The case arose
out of events which occurred on September 6, 2008, in Modesto. During
a drug deal at a hotel, the victim was struck in the head with a
machete and robbed of his money. The victim was transported to the
hospital for treatment of a scalp laceration. Deputies recovered the
machete and blood evidence. During the investigation, Larry Eugene
Smith and Channing Wilson Green were both identified and subsequently
arrested. After his arrest, Smith, while laughing, told deputies,
"I'll get away with it." Upon entry of guilty pleas, the Honorable
Donald E. Shaver sentenced Smith to 3 years in state prison and Green
to four years in state prison.
MODESTO -- The man suspected ofshooting another man to death outside
the Shiva's Motel in south Modesto last month was released from
custody for lack of evidence in the case.
Larry Eugene Smith, 37, of Modesto, was shot to death in front of the
motel in the 700 blockof South Ninth Street on February 21.
That same day detectives arrestedJose Angel Cervantes, 22, of Modesto,
on suspicion of murdering Smith, later in
modesto fire at shiva motel - sends location of shooting room wall
empty and now talks of dismantle of Building to cover up event -
