Highlands fire in Wyoming threatens buildings

The Highlands Fire, burning 13 miles southeast of Newcastle,
WY,continues to burn actively resultingin the closure of Highway 16
between milepost 4 and 5. The fireis burning in grass and timber in
the vicinity of several homes.
Sixty of these structures are being threatened by current fire
activity. Several initial attack resources from Federal, State, and
local agencies are on scene and more areresponding. Heavy air tankers
are supporting the effort and a Type 3 team has been ordered to manage
the fire.
As always, the safety of the public and the firefighters is a
priority. The public is urged to remain clear of the area to reduce
traffic congestion.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Two families lost their homes in the 150-acre Highlands Fire burning
since Friday in western Custer County.
The fire threatened 60 structures, forcing families out of their
homes. Two outbuildings were also destroyed.
Firefighters have the fire 40 percent contained and are working today
to tie fire lines together while mopping up within the fire zone,
according to fire information officer Shelia French.
"The predicted weather this afternoon will test those lines," French said.
While the battle with the 4,200-acre White Draw Fire continues in
western Fall River County, resources are also attacking the 150-acre
Parker Peak Fire reported Sunday evening 2-1/2 miles northwest of
Minnekahta Junction. There is "zero containment" on that fire, French
said.
Heavy smoke in the area prevented helicopters from assisting with the
fire Monday morning. A team of smoke jumpers planned to attempt a jump
to reach the fire, French said. She could not confirm the jump at
noon.
People evacuated ahead of the Highlands Fire have been allowed to
return to their homes. Officials have asked the residents to stay at
homeand not wander around in the forest. The area remains closed to
the public.
There is heavy smoke in the area of U.S. Highway 16, but the highway
is open to traffic, French said.
Elsewhere, the Dakota Fire near Sheridan Lake is 100 percent
contained. A Type III team has taken command of the mop up operations.
In Wyoming, the Oil Creek Fire grew overnight to 8,000 acres on state,
Bureau of Land Management and privatelands. The fire has
threatenednumerous structures. Twenty families were evacuated.
Weston county and Wyoming State Forestry are managing the fire. Local
engines, dozers and local overhead are working the fire the
uncontained fire. A Wyoming State Helitack is in-route to assist with
the fire.
