SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ANCHORAGE AK
500 AM AKDT TUE SEP 4 2012
AKZ101-111-121-125-145-050000-
...AN UNSEASONABLY STRONG STORM SYSTEM WILL MOVE OVER MAINLAND ALASKA TODAY...
A POWERFUL STORM SYSTEM CURRENTLY IN THE SOUTHERN BERING SEA WILL MOVE
TOWARD MAINLAND ALASKA THIS EVENING.A STRONG WEATHER FRONT AHEAD OF
THE LOW IS CURRENTLYIMPACTING SOUTHWEST ALASKA THIS MORNING AND WILL
IMPACT SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA BEGINNING LATE THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH LATE
TONIGHT. THE STRONGEST WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP ALONG TURNAGAIN
ARM AND THE HIGHER ELEVATIONSOF THE ANCHORAGE HILLSIDE ANDEAGLE RIVER
VALLEY... AND WILL BE STRONGER THAN THE WINDS PREVIOUSLY EXPERIENCED
ON LABOR DAY. HOWEVER... THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE WITH THIS
NEXT STORM IS THAT STRONG WINDS WILL MOVE DOWN THE LOWER HILLSIDE AND
EVEN IMPACT THE LOWER ELEVATIONS OF EAST ANCHORAGE. A HIGH WIND
WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR ALL OF THESE AREAS.
THIS STRONG STORM SYSTEM RESEMBLES THE POWERFUL STORMS TYPICALLY
EXPERIENCED DURING THE WINTER. HOWEVER... IT IS UNUSUAL FOR STORMS OF
THIS STRENGTH TO MOVE THROUGH THIS EARLY IN THE FALL. WITH THE GROUND
STILL UNFROZEN AND LEAVES STILL ON THE TREES... THIS STORM HAS
THEPOTENTIAL TO PRODUCE MORE DAMAGE THAN USUAL. GUSTY WINDS MAY CAUSE
SIGNIFICANT TREE LIMB OR TREE DAMAGE AS WELL AS POWER OUTAGES. TAKE
PRECAUTIONS TO PICK UP LOOSE DEBRIS AND SECURE ANY OUTDOOR EQUIPMENT
THAT CAN BE BLOWN AROUND. ADDITIONALLY... HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES
TRAVELING ALONG TURNAGAIN ARM SHOULD USE EXTREME CAUTION IN HIGH
WINDS.
THE FRONT ASSOCIATED WITH THISSTORM ON TUESDAY WILL ALSO BRING LOCALLY
HEAVY RAINS TO SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA THROUGHTUESDAY NIGHT. HEAVY RAINS
WILL CAUSE RISES IN RIVER LEVELS AND STREAMS ACROSS THE REGION...
ESPECIALLY ALONGTHE NORTH GULF COAST AND THE SUSITNA VALLEY. ALTHOUGH
NO FLOODING IS EXPECTED AT THIS TIME... PEOPLE INVOLVED WITH OUTSIDE
ACTIVITIES NEAR RIVERS AND STREAMS OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS SHOULD BE
ALERT FOR RAPIDLY RISING WATER LEVELS AND BE PREPARED TO MOVE QUICKLY
TO HIGHER GROUND.
STAY TUNED TO THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FOR THE LATEST FORECASTS
AND WARNINGS FOR THIS MAJOR FALL STORM.
