MORE POWERFUL SECOND STORM ON THE WAY
SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ANCHORAGE AK
1205 PM AKDT SUN SEP 2 2012
AKZ101-111-121-125-050000-
...FIRST STORM MOVING AWAY FROM SOUTHCENTRAL WITH A MORE POWERFUL
SECOND STORM ON THE WAY...
THE FIRST OF A PAIR OF STORM SYSTEMS IS IMPACTING MAINLAND ALASKA THIS
MORNING WITH STRONG SOUTHERLY WINDS AND RAIN. WINDS BRIEFLY REACHED
HURRICANE FORCE IN TURNAGAIN ARM AND HIGHER ELEVATIONS OF THE
ANCHORAGE HILLSIDE THIS MORNING AND ARE NOW BEGINNING TO DIMINISH.
THIS IMPROVING TREND WILL CONTINUETHROUGH THE REMAINDER OF TODAY AND
TONIGHT.
A MORE POWERFUL STORM CURRENTLY IN THE WESTERN BERING SEA WILL MOVE
TOWARD MAINLAND ALASKA BY TOMORROWEVENING. A STRONG WEATHER FRONT
AHEAD OF THE LOW WILL IMPACT SOUTHWEST AND SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA
BEGINNING TUESDAY MORNING. THE STRONGEST WINDS ARE AGAINEXPECTED TO
DEVELOP ALONG TURNAGAIN ARM AND THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS OF THE ANCHORAGE
HILLSIDE AND EAGLE RIVER VALLEY... AND WILL BE STRONGERTHAN THE WINDS
BEING EXPERIENCED WITH THIS FIRST LOW. HOWEVER... THE MOST SIGNIFICANT
DIFFERENCE WITH THIS NEXT STORM IS THAT STRONG WINDS WILL MOVE DOWN
THE LOWER HILLSIDE AND EVEN IMPACT THE LOWER ELEVATIONS OF EAST
ANCHORAGE. A HIGH WIND WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR ALL OF THESE AREAS.
POWERFUL STORMS FOLLOWING THIS TRACK ARE TYPICAL DURING THE WINTER...
BUT ARE MUCH MORE UNUSUAL THIS EARLY IN THE FALL. WITH THE GROUND
STILL UNFROZEN AND LEAVES STILL ON THE TREES... THIS STORMHAS THE
POTENTIAL TO PRODUCE MORE DAMAGE THAN USUAL. THIS MAY INCLUDE FALLING
TREES ANDBRANCHES AS WELL AS POWER OUTAGES. ADDITIONALLY... HIGH
PROFILE VEHICLES TRAVELING ALONG TURNAGAIN ARM SHOULD USE EXTREME
CAUTION IN HIGH WINDS.
STAY TUNED TO THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FOR THE LATEST FORECASTS
AND WARNINGS FOR THIS MAJOR FALL STORM.
