BAN CONGRATULATES AMBASSADOR RICE ON BEING NAMED US NATIONAL SECURITY

today congratulated United States Ambassador to the United Nations
Susan Rice on her appointment as National Security Adviser to her
country.

"The Secretary-General appreciates the dynamic role that Susan Rice
has played as United States Permanent Representative to the United
Nations since 2009," Mr. Ban's spokesperson said in a
<"http://www.un.org/sg/statements/index.asp?nid=6876">statement.

"She has been a strong voice in the Security Council and an effective
advocate on the full range of issues before the United Nations, from
peace and security to human rights and development."

Mr. Ban praised Ms. Rice's commitment to her work and in particular to
African issues and women's empowerment.

"The United Nations as a whole has benefited from her commitment to
strong US engagement with the Organization as the world's principal
forum for addressing key global challenges through cooperative and
multilateral solutions," the statement said.

Mr. Ban wished her success in her new role and said he looked forward
to continued cooperation in her new capacity as well as with Ms.
